Cardboard Boat Race

Mara was involved in the 7th grade Cardboard Boat Race today.  She and 2 other girls spent last Saturday creating the S.S. Salad.....it was cute and creative...but would it float?  The only materials they were allowed to use in constructing the boat were cardboard, tape, glue, staples, and paint.

That's a bottle of Hidden Valley Ranch on the back!

And it's in the water........

And they are actually moving in the water...........

And they are starting to make the turn to come back to shore...........

And the salad bowl seems to be leaning to the side a bit.........

And Vanessa has officially abandoned ship!

I guess their salad got a little too drenched with water...they'll have to push it back to shore.

Maybe next time they'll try a different water repellant!

So, the key to a winning cardboard boat is to cover the entire thing in duct tape to seal the cardboard and to repel the water.  A good set of oars is crucial, too.......something with an angle to cut through the water.   But, do we really want to spend $200 on duct tape just to win the race?  I think they had just as much fun sinking as they would have winning!
